a Uk Ex pat in Turkey

Moved from the UK for a quieter Life

Having holidayed in Oludeniz and sometimes Dalyan for almost 25 years, I decided to take early retirement at 55 and settle in the Ovacik/Hisaronu area for a while. Having just completed my first full year living here I decided to put a few links and words down on this website.

I moved to Turkey in September 2020 packed in work and took my pension early for a more laid back life and more so the warmer climate. Although I am a foreigner in this country in this area I feel so welcome by locals, I also didn’t realise how big the English ex pat population in the Fethiye area is, I have heard its around 5000, which would not surprise me. You don’t have to walk far before you hear English being spoken. (even this year where there have been no English tourists due to the pandemic).

Moving to Turkey First Experiences

Settling into life in Turkey was quite simple, much easier than I thought. Getting Residency was straightforward getting a bank account was OK you do have to sign dozens of pieces of paper though, and make sure you ask for your debit cards to be enabled for online use if you want to purchase of the internet. Phones can be a pain, you will need to get a Turkish sim and a Turkish mobile phone. An English number causes no end of problems, and your English phone will be disabled from using Turkish phone networks after a period of time.
